Basic information
The newest addition to The Children’s Museum of the Upstate‘s family is its location in downtown Spartanburg. the Spartanburg Childrens Museum is tucked into a side street off Main Street, this block is filled with storefronts that are being revitalized.
The museum itself is two-stories with guests walking in the front door to a cheerful staff manning the admission counter, a set of stairs going down, and a cozy reading nook to the right. The prices are reasonably set:
- General admission – $5
- Military admission – $4.50
- Members – Free. Membership packages start at $150 and can be used at both locations of TCMU.
The museum is designed for children five and under. And this is very, very accurate; older children would not enjoy it for very long and the layout would make them look like giants. Plan on spending just an hour or two with the activities.
Activities
The street-level floor has:
- contained space for the small infants and wobbly toddlers with many activities
- a cafe with a fun ice cream scooper
- a grocery store and road-side stand veggie and fruit sorting station
- veterinary office with a large Operation-style turtle to perform surgery on
- a tree house and nature activities behind it
The lower-level has:
- an epic water table
- train table with numerous tracks and towns
- building materials that are sturdy and lightweight
- an art studio with space for story time
Be sure to check the calendar of activities to make sure you get the chance to participate in the staff-led activity such a story time or a craft. It makes the experience even more enjoyable!
Parking
There is two-hour street parking available in front of the museum and a parking garage just across Magnolia from the door. If you opt for street parking be sure to keep an eye on the time, they do check the and issue time limit violation tickets!
Other important details
There is not a snack area or dining option available on-site. Downtown Spartanburg has plenty of toddler-friendly dining options. We picked Nacho Taco since it was just two doors up from the museum and it was quite tasty!
One last suggestion to have a fun and successful visit to The Children’s Museum of the Upstate – Spartanburg… wear comfy clothes! I was NOT thinking and wore a Carly, leggings and a tee would have been a smarter choice but thankfully I didn’t show anyone anything embarrassing at the Spartanburg childrens museum. Oops!
