The latest in our camping adventures brings a Versailles State Park Review and leaves me wondering where the heck is Trail 4! This park had a bit of Groundhog Day element to it but overall it was a winner! Easy to get to, easy to get around without getting into the car, but with a dash of hide-n-seek in the mix.
Versailles State Park Review
Versailles State Park Review is located in the ‘heel’ of Indiana, just off of Route 50 that cross the grand ol’ U.S. of A! It is an easy drive from a lot of cities in the region, Louisville, KY, Cincinnati, OH, and Indianapolis, IN.
Did you know that Indiana is known for its covered bridges? Well, this state park has one right at the entrance! Along with an iconic CCC worker statue, too, like Ouabache. Add in a lake, a couple of rivers, and lots of campsite options and it is a winner.
The park is over 5500 acres but if you don’t explore the bike trails area it feels pretty cozy and compact.
According to the map, our Versailles State Park review should have had me talking about 8 miles of trails. However, we never found Trail 4/Otter Trail. It must have moved packed up and taken a bike trail out of the park. Hehe!
Trail 2/Orchard Trail does this interesting figure eight around the campgrounds and the park. It was right next to our selected campsite so it made it easy to hop on to it and head throughout the park.
Truth be told, the map versus the markers for the trails made it pretty easy to get lost a couple of times. That being said, the trails were still amazing and I love, love, love Trail 1/Old Forest. It was a stunning walk filled with lots of great natural sights and sounds.
If mountain biking is your thing than you will love this park, it has over 22 miles of trails. They are also open to hikers as well!
I am all about trees for shade and hammocks as well as privacy. This time we had less shade than normal so we made use of the soccer mom pop-up tent for over the picnic table. As for the tent situation, we used our Semoo 3-person tent for another round. Honestly, it is a great introductory option but I don’t see it lasting for years. We also had a little buddy at our site, a stunning cardinal. He didn’t like the competition though that kept showing up in my car’s side mirror!
I loved this park and cannot wait to go back again, especially in the fall to see the leaves in the autumn glory!
|The small human’s highlights||The Busy Llama highlights|
|Favorite things||Seeing the dam with the geese wandering at the top; the waterfall on Old Forest Trail||Old Forest Trail provided a great workout and a view; the little purple flowers; listening to the frogs at night|
|Coolest thing seen||The dragonflies along Old Forest Trail||Watching my daughter cross the creek rocks on her own with no help!|
|Final thoughts||Nope||Where the hell was Trail 4/Otter Trail?!?!?|
Sometimes when you are tired you sense of direction gets a bit wonky. If you just nodded your head when I said that then you’ll agree with my lowlight on this trip, for real. We got a bit “lost” on Trail 2/Orchard Trail since it does a figure eight and loops around Campground A and the middle of nowhere forest.
Another thing that I didn’t really like was the showers and sinks had those annoying push button style faucets. You had to repeatedly hit the dang button to restart the water while showering. From a conservation standpoint that is super duper helpful, from a soap all over your face while wearing contacts standpoint it was not so helpful.
Would we go back again?
Heck, yeah! It is on the short list of places to revisit.
